The Dallas Cowboys Madden NFL 27 playbook is a West Coast Power Run offense paired with a Base 4-3 defense, and this MaddenGuides.com breakdown covers every formation family, the play distribution behind them, and how the book is actually built.

Gun is what defines this book — 20 sets and 335 plays of it — so the Cowboys playbook in Madden NFL 27 suits a spread passer who still wants a real inside run game behind 11 personnel, and it punishes single-high defenses that bring an extra body down against the run.

The Dallas Cowboys playbook in Madden NFL 27 runs a West Coast Power Run offense across 40 formations and 611 plays, backed by a Base 4-3 defense holding 25 formations and 373 plays. Gun carries 54.8 percent of the offense, Nickel carries 48.3 percent of the defense, and the book fits spread passers who still want inside zone.

Introduction

It’s Kobra here, and the Dallas Cowboys Madden NFL 27 playbook is a West Coast Power Run offense built on 40 formations and 611 total plays, paired with a Base 4-3 defense that holds 25 formations and 373 plays. Brian Schottenheimer is the coach attached to it. The offense leans Gun-heavy at 54.8 percent of all plays, with 11 personnel on the field for 61.7 percent of the book. If you want a spread passing attack that still carries real downhill runs, this is your book.

Now here is what caught my attention when I pulled the whole thing apart. The run-to-pass split sits at 32 percent run, 17 percent play-action and 39 percent dropback, which sounds balanced until you see where those runs live. They are not tucked away in heavy sets you never call. Inside Zone shows up in 15 of the 40 formations. That means the run game follows you into the spread instead of forcing you to sub into a look the defense can read from the sideline.

MaddenGuides.com has been breaking down Madden schemes since 2001, and I wrote the official EA Sports Madden NFL 09 and 10 Strategy Guides on top of 25-plus years coaching real football. So this is not a list of button inputs. Every section below tells you why a concept works, what the coverage rules underneath it are doing, and where the book gives you an edge.

What the Dallas Cowboys Playbook Runs in Madden NFL 27

Both sides of this book are deep, but they are deep in different ways. The offense carries 40 formations and 611 plays, averaging 15.3 plays per formation. The defense carries 25 formations and 373 plays, averaging 14.9 plays per formation. Nearly identical depth per set, with the offense simply holding 15 more sets to pull from.

Each side has one family doing the heavy lifting. Gun leads the offense at 54.8 percent of all offensive plays. Nickel leads the defense at 48.3 percent. Neither one is a token lead, either — both sit at 10 or more formations while every other family on their side tops out at five.

That shapes how you learn the book. You are not studying 65 formations across offense and defense. You are learning two big families properly, then adding the situational sets around them. Get comfortable inside Gun and Nickel and you already control more than half of what this book can call.

The West Coast Power Run label is accurate but incomplete. West Coast tells you the passing game works short and rhythmic. Power Run tells you the ground game wants downhill angles rather than perimeter speed. Both halves show up in the play list, and the sets that carry them are almost always the same sets.

Cowboys Offense in Madden NFL 27: West Coast Power Run

Twenty Gun formations. That is the headline. Gun holds 335 of the 611 offensive plays, and Singleback backs it up with 10 formations and 147 plays, or 24.1 percent. Those two families alone account for 482 plays — just under four out of every five snaps in the book.

Underneath them the book thins out fast. I Form gives you three formations and 45 plays at 7.4 percent. Pistol matches it at three formations and 39 plays. Strong carries two formations and 30 plays. Goal Line is a single set with 12 plays, and Hail Mary is a single set with three.

Okay this part is key. Gun Doubles Clamp Stack is the deepest set in the entire offense at 27 plays, and the clamp-stack alignment is why it earns that depth. Stacking the outside receiver behind the slot forces a press CB to either give up the free release or bail immediately, so the same call gives you a quick slant on a bail and a smash-corner concept against press. Two answers, one look, no motion required.

Under that sits a tie at 24 plays between Gun Wing Slot Offset and Singleback Bunch, then another tie at 21 between Gun Split Close and Gun Tight Slots. Those tie tiers matter more than the ranking does. When four or five sets all carry 21-plus plays, you can build an entire game plan out of two formations and never show the defense a tendency.

The recurring plays tell you what this offense actually believes in. HB Slip Screen is carried by 18 of the 40 formations, the widest reach of any play in the book. Inside Zone follows at 15, Stick at 10, then a four-way tie at nine formations each between Read Option, HB Draw, HB Stretch and HB Dive. Four Verticals rounds it out at seven.

See how EA did that. The screen and the draw sit in the same formations as your dropback passes, which is the entire point of a West Coast structure — you answer a hot pass rush without changing personnel. When a defense starts sending five, you do not audible to a max protect. You call the screen out of the exact set you have been throwing from all game, and the extra rusher becomes the reason it breaks. More concepts like this live in our playbook breakdowns hub.

Personnel-wise it is an 11 personnel book at 61.7 percent, with 12 personnel at 16.7 percent and 21 personnel at 11.3 percent. That 21 personnel slice is what separates this from a pure spread book. It is where I Form and Strong live, and it is how you finish a lead you built through the air.

Dallas Cowboys Defensive Scheme and the Nickel Front

Defensive formation families in the Dallas Cowboys Madden NFL 27 playbook, ranked by play count.

The scheme is listed as Base 4-3, but the play list says something different. The actual 4-3 family is one formation and six plays, 1.6 percent of the defense. Nickel is where the work happens: 10 formations, 180 plays, 48.3 percent.

Behind Nickel, the 3-4 family gives you five formations and 63 plays at 16.9 percent. Dime carries two formations and 57 plays at 15.3 percent. Then it drops off — 3-3-5 Penny at 21 plays, 2-5 Over Wide at 15, Goal Line across three sets at 13 plays total, Dollar at 12, and single six-play sets for both 4-3 and Prevent.

This is where it gets interesting. Nickel 2-4 alone holds 45 plays, the deepest defensive set in the book, and Dime 2-3 sits right behind it at 39. Those two formations cover 84 plays between them, which is more than the entire 3-4 family. If you play online, you are living in those two sets.

The mug looks are the reason. Six of the ten Nickel formations carry a Mug or Load tag — 2-4 Dbl Mug, 2-4 Load, 2-4 Load Dbl Mug, 2-4 Load Mug, 2-4 Odd Dbl Mug and 2-4 Single Mug. Walking LBs up over the guards forces the offense to declare a protection before the snap, and whatever they slide toward tells you which side your free rusher is coming from.

Coverage-wise this book is zone-first and it is not close. Cover 3 Sky and Tampa 2 each appear in 16 of the 25 formations. Cover 4 Quarters is in 13, Cover 6 in 12, and Cover 3 Match and Cover 1 Hole in 11 each. Cover 2 Man is the top man call at 10 formations, with Cover 2 Invert at nine.

Tampa 2 being that widespread is the piece most people miss. The MIKE running the deep middle takes away the seam route that normally kills Cover 2, so you can play a two-deep shell against 11 personnel without giving up the throw that shell is supposed to concede. Pair it with Cover 3 Sky out of the same formation and the pre-snap picture is identical for both.

Inside the Numbers

Horizontal bar chart of shared formation overlap with other books, the Eagles defense leading at 100 percent and the Cardinals offense at 26.6 percent for the Dallas Cowboys Madden NFL 27 playbook
Formation overlap between the Dallas Cowboys Madden NFL 27 playbook and other books.

The distribution tells you this book was built top-heavy on purpose. Five of the seven offensive families hold three formations or fewer, and two of those are single-set families. Everything you actually game plan with comes from Gun and Singleback, and the rest exist for one job apiece.

Run the subtraction on the offense and it gets clearer. Take Gun’s 335 plays out of 611 and you are left with 276 plays spread across 20 formations — 13.8 plays per set against Gun’s 16.8. The non-Gun half of the book is real, it is just shallower per formation.

Defense skews harder. Nickel and Dime together are 12 of the 25 formations and 237 of the 373 plays, which is 63.5 percent of the defensive book in sub packages. The four smallest families — 4-3, Prevent, Dollar and 2-5 — combine for just 39 plays.

Now for the part that shapes how you use this book against other people. On defense, the Eagles playbook shares all 25 formations, a 100 percent match, so switching between the two costs you nothing mechanically. The Falcons playbook follows at 60.7 percent with 17 shared sets, and the Rams playbook at 56.7 percent, also 17 shared. The 4-3 playbook is the furthest away at 10.8 percent.

Offense is much more distinct. The Cardinals playbook is the closest at 26.6 percent with 17 shared formations, the Colts playbook next at 23.4 percent and 15 shared, and the Lions playbook at 23.1 percent with 15 shared. Air Raid Classic is the furthest at 3.3 percent. That low ceiling is the takeaway — no other offensive book gets close to a copy of this one, so the sets you learn here mostly stay here.

One honest note on the recurring-play counts above. The data gives how many formations carry each play, never which specific formations they are, so I am not going to tell you that HB Slip Screen lives in a particular set. Load the book and check. Our Madden tools section has the finder for exactly that.

How to Run the Dallas Cowboys Madden NFL 27 Playbook

Start narrow. Pick Gun Doubles Clamp Stack and Gun Wing Slot Offset as your base pair — 51 plays between them and both in 11 personnel, so you never tip anything with a substitution. Learn six calls out of each before you touch anything else in the book.

Your third formation should be Singleback Bunch at 24 plays. The bunch alignment jams defenders into the same square of grass, so man coverage has to fight through traffic and zone has to sort three receivers with overlapping landmarks. Same personnel again, completely different picture for the defense.

Set your audibles around answers, not favorites. You want a quick game concept for pressure, Inside Zone for a light box, and the screen for anyone selling out on the pass rush. Inside Zone appearing in 15 different formations means you can carry that audible almost anywhere without rebuilding your package.

For the run game proper, the 21 personnel sets are your closing package. I Form and Strong together give you five formations and 75 plays, and that is where the downhill angles live. Bring them out with a lead and a clock to kill, not on second and long.

On defense, build out of Nickel 2-4 and Dime 2-3 and use the mug variants as disguise rather than pressure. Show the double mug, back both LBs out into the hook zones, and the QB who read blitz pre-snap now has two extra defenders in the throwing lanes he already committed to. That single trick wins more downs than any blitz in the book.

Against the run, remember your base 4-3 family is six plays. Do not go looking for it. Use 3-4 Under 4 Tech at 18 plays as your heavy answer instead, since the 4-technique alignment already sets a hard edge without subbing out your nickel CB. There is more setup detail in our Madden tips and guides library.

Last thing on tendencies. With 32 percent run and 17 percent play-action, the book gives you enough ground calls to make play-action honest. Run it 10 times early even when the yards are ugly, because the LB who steps up on the eleventh is the one your PA concept is designed to beat. Real football works the same way, which you can read more about in this rundown of American football strategy.

Final Thoughts on the Cowboys Book in Madden NFL 27

Here is the honest read. This is a spread passing book with a run game that refuses to leave, and the whole thing works because Gun and Nickel are deep enough to hide everything else you do. Learn four formations properly and you can play a full season out of them.

Where it gets hard is against opponents who have already seen the clamp stack look. That is when the 21 personnel sets earn their spot, and why I told you to bank those early runs even when they gain two yards.
