For this Madden Tips Offensive Tips video breakdown, we show how effective the Double Post Passing Concept can be at attacking various Cover 4 coverages.
Often the Double Post Passing Concept can turn into one play touchdown if Cover 4 coverage is called. The play that we use that has two receivers running double is the Gun Trey Y Flex PA Crossers.
Passing Concept Diagram:
The Double Post Passing Concept features two receivers on the same side, running skinny post routes. It is one of the go-to concepts that high school, college, and pro football. The Double Post Passing Concept has the quarterback reading the same side safety as the two post routes are being run. The quarterback looks for the outside post route first. If the safety covers that, then the quarterback looks for the inside post route.
Quick Setup:
- Hot route the middle slot receiver on a drag (optional).
- Motion the tight end inside and then route him to pass block (optional).
Madden Guides Tip: obviously if you hot route the middle slot receiver when running the then the double post passing concept no longer applies.
Coaching Points:
- Quarters and Palms are two different types of Cover 4. In Cover 4 Quarters, the inside defender playing the quarter flat will run with the inside receiver, running the post for about 15 to 20 yards, then release him. Whereas in Cover 4 Palms, he will stay with the slot receiver running post.
- Hot route the middle slot receiver on a drag route. This puts fewer defenders deep down the field when Cover 4 Palms is called. Against Cover 4 Quarters, he will just drop back like normal. However, the free safety will now help cover the outside post receiver. The ball can still be thrown as long as the receiver has a few steps.
- Consider subbing out the tight end with a tackle to add extra pass protection when rolling out. If you choose to do this though, the tight end’s route won’t hold the outside corner since he is staying in to pass block. Therefore, he will drop further back, possibly being in the position to help defend the deep post route. This coverage rule holds for Quarters and Palms coverage.
- When running the Gun Trey Y Flex PA Crossers, don’t run it any closer than 40 yards out. Otherwise, if you do, chances are you won’t complete the pass because of the 12th Defender, which is at the back of the end zone.
- Having a fast receiver on the outside running the Deep post route makes this plate even that much more effective. Any receiver with a 92 plus speed rating should be acceptable.

Final Thoughts:
The double post passing concept is a great option if your opponent likes to call cover for type coverages. It gives you a good chance for a deep shot deep down the field, possibly for one play touchdown.
