In this Madden Tips breakdown, we at the quick passing game attacking the flats and how we like to look for the tight end in the flat.

Back when I (Kobra) was playing Big B on the PS2, he told me always look to attack the flats if I had at least one receiver running a route in those areas of the field. Since I have a made it point any time, I run a passing concept or play; I look to throw to the flats first if open. One of the formations I like to attack the flats is the Singleback Bunch. In this Madden Tips breakdown,  I want to show an example of a passing concept I run often from the Singleback Bunch that I will look to throw to the flat first.

Singleback Bunch – Spacing

Quick Passing Game - Attacking the Flats 1

I try to run plays with at least one receiver running a flat route such as the Singleback Bunch – Spacing. Notice the tight end (RB) is the receiver running his pass route towards the flat.

Quick Passing Game - Attacking the Flats 2

Once the ball is snapped, if I notice a blitz and no defender is covering the flat where the tight end is running his flat route, I won’t even look to throw to the slot receiver, who is running the spot route.

Quick Passing Game - Attacking the Flats 3

Instead, I will throw immediately to the tight end in the flat, such as shown in the image above. I thought, why risk being sacked, while waiting for the slot receiver to curl back towards the quarterback. I rather take the sure yardage and pass to the tight end than wait for the slot receiver.

Madden Guides Tip: If it’s third and long, obliviously the quick passing game attacking the flats is not an option if you need to pick up 10 yards to get the first down. However, if it’s third and short, throwing to the tight end or any other receiver in the flat makes more sense, plus it’s a safe throw if no defender is covering the flat.

Quick Passing Game - Attacking the Flats 4

My tight end makes the catch and heads up the field for positive yardage.

Final Thoughts

I know quick passing game attacking the flats is a simple write up and most of you already know this. However, I have seen to many players while playing online pass up the easy throw to the flats. Instead, they wait for a deep receiver to get open. If they would have thrown to the open receiver in the flat, they would have picked up the easy yardage.
