The Colts book in Madden NFL 27 runs Shane Steichen’s West Coast Power Run offense and a Tampa 2 defense. It suits players who throw first but want a real run game behind it.

Indianapolis Colts Madden NFL 27 Playbook at a Glance

It’s Kobra here, and the Indianapolis Colts Madden NFL 27 playbook is one of the more balanced Gun books in the game. The offense carries 39 sets and 591 plays under a West Coast Power Run scheme, and the defense carries 22 sets and 325 plays under Tampa 2. Head coach Shane Steichen’s book fits a player who wants to spread the field from Gun but still run the ball from Pistol and Strong Pro.

Here is the angle I want you to keep in mind. This book owns a set nobody else in Madden NFL 27 has: Gun Trips TE Flex Close Wk, and it is the deepest set in the whole book at 30 plays. That is not a novelty formation buried at the bottom of the list. It is the centerpiece.

I have been breaking down playbooks on MaddenGuides.com since 2001, going back to my time writing the official EA Sports Madden strategy guides, and the first thing I look for in any book is where the depth sits. In this one, the depth sits in a set you can only get by picking the Colts.

Playbook Overview

Put the offense and defense side by side and they are built almost the same way. The offense averages 15.2 plays per set across 39 sets. The defense averages 14.8 plays per set across 22 sets. Neither side is padded with thin three-play formations, and neither side crams everything into one or two monster sets.

The lead family on each side tells you the identity. On offense, Gun carries 66 percent of the book with 23 sets and 390 plays. On defense, Nickel is the biggest family at 36 percent, with 117 plays in six sets. Both sides are built for a spread-out, pass-first game, which matches how the real Colts have played under Steichen. You can follow that real-world side on NFL.com.

The play-weighted identity backs it up: 24 percent run, 15 percent play-action and 46 percent dropback. Screens add about 6 percent, RPOs about 5 and QB option runs about 4. Count the option runs with the handoffs and roughly 28 percent of the book keeps the ball on the ground, which is why this is a Power Run book and not an Air Raid book.

The one thing that separates this book from the standard Gun-heavy template is Pistol. Five Pistol sets with 63 plays give you a downhill run look that most Gun books simply do not carry.

Colts Offensive Scheme in Madden NFL 27

Offensive formation families in the Indianapolis Colts Madden NFL 27 playbook

Gun is not just the biggest family here, it is two-thirds of the offense. Behind it, Singleback carries 75 plays in six sets and Pistol carries 63 plays in five. I Form has 27 plays, Strong Pro has 21, Goal Line has 12 and Hail Mary has 3.

The deepest set is the exclusive one, Gun Trips TE Flex Close Wk, at 30 plays. It puts three eligible players to one side with the tight end in the trips group and the back offset weak. Defenses have to choose between rolling coverage to trips and leaving the backside single receiver alone, or staying balanced and getting outnumbered to the strong side.

Right behind it is Gun Wing Slot Offset at 27 plays. Then comes a three-way tie at 24 plays between Gun Bunch Spread Nasty, Gun Tight Y Off Wk and Gun Y Off Trips. Those five sets alone give you 129 plays, and every one of them is a Gun look.

The personnel tells you how the formations dress. Play-weighted, 11 personnel is 59.7 percent of the book, 12 personnel is 20.9 percent and 21 personnel is 11.2 percent. That 21 personnel share is high for a Gun book, and it comes from the Pistol and Strong Pro looks where a fullback leads the run.

The single best finding on this side of the ball: Strong Pro is a one-set family, but it carries 21 plays. That is deeper than most I Form sets in the game and gives you a full under-center menu out of one formation.

Indianapolis Colts Tampa 2 Defense Breakdown

Horizontal bar chart of defensive formation families with Nickel leading at 117 plays and 36 percent, followed by Dime at 87 plays, in the Colts defensive playbook for Madden NFL 27
Defensive formation families in the Indianapolis Colts Madden NFL 27 playbook

The scheme says Tampa 2, but the formation list says sub-package. Nickel has 117 plays and Dime has 87. Add them up and 204 of the 325 defensive plays, about 62.8 percent, come from five or six defensive backs on the field.

The deepest set is Nickel 3-3 Over at 42 plays, which is 12.9 percent of the whole defense by itself. Dime 2-3 follows at 36 plays. Then Nickel Wide at 24, Dime 3-2 Rush at 21 and 2-4-5 Over Wide at 18.

The base fronts are thin by comparison. The 3-4 family has 39 plays across Cub, Tite and Under. 4-3 has only 15 plays across Even 6-1 and Over Solid. 4-2-5 Over G and 2-4-5 Over Wide add 18 plays apiece. If you want to sit in a traditional four-man front all game, this is not the book.

The coverage menu is where Tampa 2 shows up. Cover 1 Hole sits in 13 of 22 sets, Tampa 2 and Cover 3 Sky in 11 each, and Cover 3 Match and Cover 4 Quarters in 10 each. That means you can call Cover 1 Hole from more than half the sets and disguise it against the same pre-snap look you show for Tampa 2.

The specialty families round it out. Dollar 3-2 Mug gives you 12 plays with seven defensive backs for obvious passing downs. Goal Line has 13 plays across 5-3, 6-2 and a one-play Pinch set. Prevent 3 Deep has six plays for the end of a half. You will not live in any of them, but every situational need has a home.

The defensive finding I would build around: Dime has four sets and 87 plays, more than the 3-4 and 4-3 families combined. Third and long is where this book is strongest.

Inside the Numbers

Bar chart of shared-set overlap with other books, led by the Bengals defense at 51.9 percent and the Cardinals offense at 27 percent, for the Indianapolis Colts Madden NFL 27 playbook
Formation overlap between the Indianapolis Colts Madden NFL 27 playbook and other books

How unique is the Colts book? The overlap numbers answer that. On offense, the closest match is the Cardinals playbook at 27 percent, with 17 shared sets. The Dolphins playbook follows at 24.2 percent with 16 shared, and the Jets playbook at 23.8 percent with 15 shared.

Those are low numbers. Even the closest offensive book shares barely a quarter of the combined set pool. The furthest is Air Raid Classic at 3.4 percent. If you learn this offense, very little of it transfers cleanly to another book.

Defense is a different story. The Bengals playbook shares 51.9 percent with 14 shared sets, and the Lions playbook and the Steelers playbook both sit at 43.3 percent with 13 shared each. The furthest is Cover 2 at 13.3 percent. The defense is far more portable than the offense.

The recurring plays show the core of the offense. Inside Zone appears in 15 of 39 sets, HB Slip Screen in 14 and Read Option in 12. Mesh Spot shows up in 8, HB Stretch in 7, and Stick, HB Dive and Outside Zone in 6 each. Three of the top four are runs or run-adjacent, and that is the Power Run label showing up in the data.

How to Run the Colts Playbook in Madden NFL 27

Start your offensive gameplan in the exclusive Gun Trips TE Flex Close Wk. Use it as your base pass set on first and second down. The trips side stresses the flat defender and the weak-side single receiver gets isolated. Read the safety rotation pre-snap and throw away from it.

Pair it with Gun Wing Slot Offset for your Inside Zone and Read Option looks. Since Inside Zone and Read Option are so widely spread through the book, you can run the same concept from several different sets and keep the defense guessing about which set it is coming from.

Keep Pistol in your rotation on short yardage. Pistol Strong and Pistol Doubles Y Off carry 18 plays each, and a back aligned behind the QB gets downhill faster than an offset Gun back. Save Strong Pro for the red zone and goal line, where its 21-play menu gives you power runs and play-action from the same look.

On defense, live in Nickel 3-3 Over on early downs. Its 42 plays give you Tampa 2, Cover 3 and Cover 1 Hole from one alignment. On third and long, check to Dime 2-3 or Dime 3-2 Rush and drop extra defenders into the intermediate zones.

Against a player who loads the box to stop Inside Zone, flip to the empty looks. Gun Empty Base Flex has 12 plays, and Gun Empty Bunch and Gun Empty Bunch Wide carry 9 each. Five receivers out forces the defense to declare its coverage before the snap, and a pre-snap read on an empty set is about as clean as Madden gets.

For audibles, set one run, one quick pass, one screen and one deep shot per set. HB Slip Screen is your answer to the blitz, since it shows up in 14 sets. More setup ideas are in our Madden tips section, and you can check the official game details on the EA Madden NFL 27 site.
