Detroit Lions Madden NFL 27 Playbook at a Glance
It’s Kobra here, and the Detroit Lions Madden NFL 27 playbook is the one I want to walk you through today. It’s a West Coast Power Run offense with 40 formations and 579 plays, paired with a defense listed as Base 3-4 that holds 21 formations and 291 plays. The play mix is 30 percent run, 18 percent play-action and 43 percent dropback. If you want to throw from Gun without giving up a physical run game, this book was built for you.
Now here is what caught my attention. Most Gun-heavy books treat the run game as a courtesy, a draw and a screen per set so you don’t get flagged for being one-dimensional. This one doesn’t. Inside Zone shows up in 16 of the 40 offensive sets, and the book owns two Maryland I formations that no other playbook in Madden NFL 27 carries. That combination is rare.
Below I’ll break down how the offense and defense are built, what the numbers say about the book’s real identity, and how to set it up so it plays the way the data says it should.
How the Lions Book Is Built
Start with density, because it tells you how much depth you get per look. The offense spreads 579 plays across 40 formations, which works out to 14.5 plays per formation. The defense packs 291 plays into 21 formations, or 13.9 plays per formation. Those two numbers sit close together, so neither side is a thin afterthought.
Each side has a clear lead family. Gun carries 64.2 percent of the offense. Nickel carries 51.2 percent of the defense. Both of those are majority shares, which means you will spend most of your snaps in one family on each side of the ball, and your audible and hot-route habits should be built around those two families first.
The scheme labels are worth reading carefully. Head coach P. Gaffney’s book lists its offense as West Coast Power Run, and that label actually fits: West Coast timing throws out of Gun, with Power O and Counter Y sitting underneath. If you want the real-football background on why short timing throws and gap runs pair so well, the American football strategy overview is a good primer.
The defensive label is where you need to look past the name. It says Base 3-4, but the 3-4 family is only two sets and 12 plays, while the 4-3 family has five sets and 63 plays. If you pick this book expecting a true odd front, you’ll find the 4-3 does more of the base-down work. For how this book stacks up against the rest of the league, our playbook breakdowns cover every team.
Lions Offense in Madden NFL 27: Gun With a Power Run Core

Gun is the whole show up top: 22 formations and 372 plays. Singleback is a distant second at nine formations and 111 plays, then I Form at four formations and 48 plays. Maryland I, Goal Line, Strong and Hail Mary fill out the rest.
The deepest sets come as a four-way tie at 24 plays: Gun Box Y Split, Gun Bunch X Nasty, Gun Doubles Clamp Stack and Gun Tight Slots. Right behind them are three more Gun sets at 21 plays each, Spread Y-Slot Wk, Trio Y-Flex and Wing Flex Offset. Every one of the seven deepest sets in this book is a Gun look.
See how EA did that? All four of those 24-play sets run 11 personnel, so you can live in one personnel group, move between them, and never tip your hand with a substitution. The defense sees the same bodies whether you line up in a bunch, a stack or a tight slot look.
Here’s the detail that makes this book different from a generic Gun book. Gun Box Y Split is exclusive to the Lions, and so are Singleback Doubles South, Maryland I Close and Maryland I Tight Close. Four sets, found in no other playbook. Box Y Split being one of the deepest sets in the book is a big deal, because the exclusive look is not a gimmick with six plays in it.
The Maryland I sets are the power piece. Maryland I Close is 12 personnel with two tight ends. Maryland I Tight Close lines up with zero tight ends and three backs, which is the only way this book gets into 30 personnel. Both carry Power O and PA Power O, so the play-action comes off the exact same backfield action as the run it is selling.
Detroit Lions Defensive Scheme and Formations

Okay this part is key. Nickel is the defense in this book: eight formations and 149 plays. The 4-3 family is second with 63 plays, and Dime’s single set, 2-3, holds 36 plays on its own. Goal Line, 3-4, Dollar and Prevent round it out, none of them above 13 plays.
The deepest defensive set is Nickel 3-3 Over at 42 plays, which is 14.4 percent of the whole defense in one formation. Dime 2-3 follows at 36, then Nickel Wide at 24. 4-3 Over and 4-3 Under tie at 18 plays, level with Nickel 3-3 Swap Dbl Mug.
Look at the set names and a theme jumps out. Six defensive sets are Mug looks: five in Nickel plus Dollar 3-2 Mug. Together they hold 84 plays. That is a lot of pre-snap pressure disguise, and it’s where this defense gets its teeth, because a Mug front forces the offense to account for a potential sixth rusher before the snap.
Nickel 3-3 Swap Dbl Mug is the one to learn first. Its 18 plays lean hard into pressure calls like Blitz Loop 0, Blitz Loop 3, Hot Blitz 3 and Mid Blitz, mixed with simulated pressures like Nickel SIM 2 and SS SIM 2. You can show the same double-mug look and either bring the house or drop into a zone behind a four-man rush.
The coverage menu is broad. Tampa 2, Cover 3 Sky and Cover 1 Hole each appear in 11 of the 21 defensive sets, and Cover 3 Match is in 10. If you want to build a coverage plan off these calls, our Madden strategies section breaks down how to disguise each one.
Inside the Numbers

What the distribution really says is that this is a Gun offense with a legit under-center run game attached, not a balanced book. Singleback, I Form, Maryland I and Strong together hold 189 plays, which is 32.6 percent of the offense. That is enough to be a real threat, and not enough to be the identity.
The recurring plays back that up. Inside Zone is in 16 of 40 formations, and 14 of those 16 are Gun sets. HB Slip Screen is in 14 formations, every one of them Gun. So the two most repeated plays in the book are Gun run and screen answers, the plays that punish a defense for sitting in two-high shells against your spread looks.
Counter Y and Stick come next at six formations each. Below them sits a tier of eight plays tied at five formations: HB Dive, HB Stretch, Inside Zone Split, Mesh Spot, Outside Zone, Power O, Spacing and Zone Fake Jet. Five of those eight are runs, which is the “Power Run” half of the scheme label showing up in the data.
Personnel is heavily 11. It accounts for 63.2 percent of the offense, with 12 personnel at 20.7 percent, 21 personnel at 8.3 percent and 20 personnel at 3.1 percent. If your roster’s WR3 is weak, you’ll feel it on nearly two thirds of your snaps.
Now the overlap chart. On offense, the Cardinals playbook is the closest match at 24.6 percent with 16 shared sets. The Titans playbook and the Steelers playbook tie at 24.2 percent, sharing 16 and 15 sets. The furthest book is the Pistol playbook at 2.9 percent, which makes sense given the Lions carry no Pistol sets at all.
The defense overlaps much more. The Colts playbook and the Jets playbook tie at 43.3 percent with 13 shared sets each, and the Bengals playbook follows at 37.9 percent with 11 shared. The Vikings playbook is the furthest at 16.7 percent. If you love this defense and need a backup, the Colts or Jets will feel most familiar.
How to Run the Detroit Lions Playbook in Madden NFL 27
Build your offense around three sets and you’ll cover almost everything. Gun Bunch X Nasty for the pass game, Gun Doubles Clamp Stack for the run-pass tie, and Maryland I Close for short yardage and play-action. All three are verified in the book with the plays below.
Gun Bunch X Nasty carries 24 plays including Inside Zone, Counter Y, Mesh Spot and Spacing Switch. The bunch compresses the receivers, so man coverage gets picked through traffic on Mesh Spot, while Counter Y attacks the defense that overplays the bunch side.
Gun Doubles Clamp Stack is your RPO set. It holds RPO Alert Out and Return RPO Zone Alert next to Inside Zone and HB Slip Screen. Read the flat defender: if he sinks under the out, hand off, and if he squeezes the run, throw it. The stacked receivers give you a free release against press.
Maryland I Close is where you go on 3rd and 2 or inside the ten. Run Power O until the defense crowds the box, then hit PA Power O or PA Boot off the same look. When you want even more beef, Maryland I Tight Close adds HB Blast and FB Dive with three backs on the field.
Pay close attention to this one. Because 63.2 percent of the book is 11 personnel, check your WR3 and TE2 in the team ratings before you commit to it in franchise. A weak slot receiver quietly drags down two thirds of your play calls.
On defense, set your base to Nickel 3-3 Over and keep Dime 2-3 for obvious passing downs. Those two sets hold 78 plays between them and share most of the core coverages, so switching packages doesn’t force you to learn a new menu. Use Nickel 3-3 Swap Dbl Mug as your pressure look on third down.
For audibles, set Inside Zone, HB Slip Screen and a Mesh concept. Inside Zone sits in 14 Gun sets and HB Slip Screen sits in 14 as well, so those two travel with you almost everywhere, and Mesh gives you a man beater underneath. This is a Gun playbook that refuses to be soft. You get 11 personnel spacing in 22 Gun sets, a run game that shows up in the data instead of just the label, and two exclusive Maryland I sets for when you need to line up and move people. On defense, Nickel plus a deep bench of Mug pressure looks gives you enough disguise to make quarterbacks guess.
I’ve been breaking down playbooks at MaddenGuides.com since 2001, going back to my time writing the official EA Sports Madden strategy guides, and the books I trust most are the ones where the play counts match the scheme on the box. On offense, this one does.
