It’s Kobra here with the Dallas Cowboys Madden NFL 27 playbook, and this one surprised me. On paper Brian Schottenheimer runs a West Coast power run scheme, which usually means tight ends, fullbacks and a lot of snaps under center. Open the book and you find a shotgun playbook wearing a power run jacket.

Twenty of the 40 offensive formations are Gun. Those 20 formations hold 335 of the 611 plays, which is 54.8 percent of everything in the book. The under center looks are still there and they are good ones, but they are the minority.

That gap between what the scheme label promises and what the formation list actually gives you is the whole story here. Get it right and you have one of the more flexible books in the game. Get it wrong and you spend your Sunday nights running Inside Zone out of Gun Trey Open wondering why nothing hits.

Playbook Overview

Two sides, two very different personalities. The offense spreads out to 40 formations and 611 plays, an average of 15.3 plays per formation. The defense is tighter at 25 formations and 373 plays, averaging 14.9.

Personnel tells you what kind of offense this really is. Eleven personnel accounts for 61.7 percent of the plays, 12 personnel takes 16.7 percent, and 21 personnel covers 11.3 percent. Three receivers on the field is the default state, not a package you check into.

The play type split is 32 percent run, 17 percent play action and 39 percent dropback. That run number is healthy for a book this shotgun heavy, and it is the part that makes the power run label honest.

Now here is what caught my attention. The defense is listed as base 4-3 and the 4-3 family contains exactly one formation with six plays in it. Nickel holds 10 formations and 180 plays. The label on the box and the contents of the box are not the same thing.

Cowboys Offense in Madden NFL 27

Gun is the engine. Twenty formations, 335 plays, and enough variety inside it that you could never leave the shotgun and still have a complete offense. Gun Doubles Clamp Stack alone carries 27 plays, the deepest single formation in the book.

What makes the Gun section work is the tight end usage. Gun Bunch Open TE, Gun Trips TE Offset, Gun Doubles Y Off Nasty and Gun Normal Y Off Wk all put a TE in a spot where he can either chip and release or stay in and block. That is the West Coast idea surviving inside a shotgun set.

Singleback is the second family at 10 formations and 147 plays, or 24.1 percent. Five of those 10 are Wing variants: Wing, Wing Close, Wing Pair, Wing Stack and Wing Tight Left. A wing back gives you an extra gap in the run game and a free release to the flat off play action, and it does it without swapping personnel.

The heavy looks are compact. I Form has three formations and 45 plays, Strong has two formations and 30 plays, Pistol has three formations and 39 plays. Add those three families together and you get eight formations holding 114 plays, which is 18.7 percent of the offense. Small, but that is where 21 personnel lives.

Goal Line Normal gives you 12 plays and Hail Mary gives you three. Those two are situational and you will call them a handful of times a game at most.

This is the part most people miss. HB Slip Screen appears in 18 of the 40 formations in this book, more than any other play. Inside Zone shows up in 15. That means you can run the same two calls from wildly different personnel groupings and never show the defense a formation tendency, which matters more in head to head than any single money play does.

Cowboys Defensive Playbook Breakdown

Forget the base 4-3 tag. Nickel is 48.3 percent of this defense, with 10 formations and 180 plays. The 4-3 family is a single formation, Even 6-1, with six plays. If you want a true four down front you are getting it from the 3-4 family instead, which has five formations and 63 plays.

Nickel 2-4 is the anchor at 45 plays, the biggest formation on either side of this book. Around it sit seven mug variants: 2-4 Dbl Mug, 2-4 Load, 2-4 Load Dbl Mug, 2-4 Load Mug, 2-4 Odd Dbl Mug, 2-4 Single Mug and 2-4 Wide. Mugging the A gaps forces the offensive line to declare its slide protection before the snap, and you get to bail one of those linebackers into the hook zone after they commit.

Dime is the second family at two formations and 57 plays, and Dime 2-3 carries 39 of them. That is a huge play count for a Dime look. Third and long is covered without you having to leave the book you already know.

Coverage variety is the real strength here. Tampa 2 and Cover 3 Sky each appear in 16 of the 25 defensive formations. Cover 4 Quarters is in 13, Cover 6 in 12, Cover 3 Match and Cover 1 Hole in 11 each. You can show one front and run six different shells behind it.

The odd corners are worth knowing. 3-3-5 Penny is one formation with 21 plays, 2-5 Over Wide has 15, Dollar 3-2 Mug has 12. Goal Line splits three formations across just 13 plays, and Goal Line Pinch has exactly one play in it. Do not go hunting for options in there when you need a stop on the two yard line.

Dallas Cowboys Madden NFL 27 Playbook by the Numbers

The distribution here says something specific: this is a wide book on offense and a deep book on defense. Forty offensive formations averaging 15.3 plays each means breadth. Twenty five defensive formations averaging 14.9 plays each, with 45 of them stacked in one formation, means concentration.

Overlap is where it gets interesting. On defense the Cowboys share all 25 of their formations with the Eagles book, a 100 percent match. Falcons come in at 60.7 percent with 17 shared, Rams at 56.7 percent with 17 shared. If someone takes the Cowboys defense from you in a draft or a league rule, the Eagles book is a straight swap.

The offense has no twin. Closest is the Cardinals at 26.6 percent, or 17 shared formations out of 40. Colts sit at 23.4 percent with 15, Lions at 23.1 percent with 15. Nothing else gets above a quarter, which means the Cowboys offensive formation set is genuinely its own thing.

Furthest away on offense is Air Raid Classic at 3.3 percent, two shared formations. On defense the furthest is the 4-3 book at 10.8 percent with four shared. Learning the Cowboys offense buys you almost nothing toward running Air Raid, and that is useful to know before you spend a week on it.

One more split worth sitting with. Gun holds 335 plays, so the other six offensive families combine for 276. Those 276 plays are spread over 20 formations while the Gun 335 covers the other 20. Every non Gun formation is thinner on average, which is exactly why your under center packages need to be memorized rather than browsed.

How to Run the Cowboys Playbook in Madden NFL 27

Build your core around four formations and you will cover most of a game. Gun Doubles Clamp Stack for 27 plays, Singleback Bunch for 24, Gun Wing Slot Offset for 24, and Gun Split Close for 21. That is 96 plays sitting inside four setups you can learn in an afternoon.

Gun Doubles Clamp Stack is the one to start with. The stacked alignment gives your inside receiver a clean release against press, and against off coverage the two receivers on that side can cross the defender’s face before he can pass it off. Stacks beat man, spacing beats zone, and this formation lets you check between the two without moving anybody.

Singleback Bunch is your answer to man coverage blitzes. Bunch alignment makes it very hard for a defense to travel with its assignments, and the 24 plays inside it give you enough smoke and drag concepts to punish a defense that keeps sending pressure.

Watch what happens here with your audibles. Because HB Slip Screen lives in 18 of the 40 formations, you can set it as an audible and carry it everywhere. Same idea with Inside Zone at 15 formations and Stick at 10. Three audibles, almost universal availability, no formation tell.

For the run game, Read Option, HB Stretch, HB Draw and HB Dive each appear in nine formations. HB Stretch out of Singleback Wing Pair or Wing Stack is your outside run, HB Dive out of Goal Line Normal or the two Strong sets is your short yardage answer. Keep those separate in your head so you are not asking a stretch play to get you one yard.

On defense, live in Nickel 2-4 and Dime 2-3. Between them that is 84 plays. Show the same mug front on first and second down, rotate Tampa 2 and Cover 3 Sky behind it, then drop into Dime 2-3 on third and long. Bring 3-4 Under 4 Tech and its 18 plays out when you need the extra body against heavy personnel.
