The Cleveland Browns run a Vertical Power Run offense and a Base 4-3 defense under Todd Monken. The offensive book holds 593 plays across 43 formations with Gun at 55.6 percent, led by Gun Y Off Trips Wk. The defense carries 280 plays across 21 formations, and Nickel Over alone holds 42 of them.

Cleveland Browns Madden NFL 27 Playbook Breakdown

The Cleveland Browns Madden NFL 27 playbook is a Vertical Power Run offense paired with a Base 4-3 defense, and it is one of the deeper books in the game. Offense gives you 593 plays spread over 43 formations. Defense gives you 280 plays over 21. Todd Monken is the head coach attached to it, and the scheme label is honest for once — this book really does want to hand the ball off and then throw over the top of the safety that crept down to stop it.

It’s Kobra here. Now here is what caught my attention when I pulled this book apart play by play: the run/pass split says 31 percent run, but 19 percent of everything in the book is play-action. Add those together and you get half the playbook selling the run in some form. That is a big number, and it changes who this book is for.

If you like flipping between a run and a shot play out of the identical look, this fits. If you want to throw it 45 times a game from empty, it does not. Empty is in here, but it is a package, not the plan.

Playbook Overview: Cleveland Browns Playbook Identity

Look at both sides together and you see two books built at almost the same density. The offense runs 593 plays across 43 formations, which comes out to 13.8 plays per formation. The defense runs 280 plays across 21 formations, or 13.3 per formation. Nearly identical depth per look, but the offense simply carries twice as many looks to choose from.

Each side also leans hard on one family. Gun takes 55.6 percent of the offensive plays. Nickel takes 49.3 percent of the defensive plays. So the shape of your game plan is decided for you before you call anything — you are living in shotgun on offense and in a five-DB front on defense, and everything else is a change-up you dip into by situation.

That concentration decides your prep. Learn six formations here and you have access to a huge slice of the book; learn twelve and you have covered nearly everything you will call.

The personnel side backs it up. 11 personnel accounts for 53.6 percent of the offensive plays, 12 personnel another 25.1 percent, and 21 personnel 9.1 percent. One TE and three WRs is the base, two TEs is the heavy package, and the fullback stuff is a small but real corner of the book.

Browns Offensive Scheme in Madden NFL 27

Gun is the engine. Twenty-one Gun formations, 330 plays, and inside that family the deepest single set is Gun Y Off Trips Wk at 33 plays — the most play-rich formation in the entire book. Gun Y Trips Wk sits behind it at 24. Then you get a three-way tie at 21 plays each between Gun Bunch X Nasty, Gun Tight Y Off Wk and Gun Trio Y-Flex.

Okay this part is key. Those top five sets are all Gun, and four of the five are trips or bunch looks. That tells you exactly how the book wants to attack: overload one side, force the defense to declare whether it is rotating coverage or playing the trips side with a match rule, then work the backside single receiver or the TE flexed away from the strength.

Singleback is the second family at 120 plays across nine formations, and it is where the under-center run game and the wing-heavy blocking looks live. Ace Double Wing carries 18 plays, Ace Slot and Bunch carry 15 each. Pistol adds 48 more plays over four sets, with Pistol U Off Trips the deepest at 21.

Then the fullback corner: I Form gives you 44 plays over three sets, Strong 21 over two, Weak nine, and Split Backs six. Small numbers, but that is where the true power run concepts sit, and the book keeps them rather than dropping them for another Gun set.

Inside Zone is the play that shows up in more formations than anything else — 15 of the 43. HB Slip Screen appears in 12, HB Stretch in 10, Read Option in nine. Four Verticals and Stick each appear in seven. That combination of a zone run, a screen off it and a vertical shot from the same alignment is the whole scheme in three play calls, and it is why our playbook breakdowns keep coming back to formation depth rather than raw play totals.

Browns Defense and the Base 4-3 in Madden NFL 27

The label says Base 4-3, and the 4-3 family is real — four formations, 45 plays, with 4-3 Over the deepest at 18. But the actual base you will play from is Nickel. Seven Nickel formations, 138 plays, and Nickel Over on its own holds 42 plays, which is 15 percent of the whole defensive book.

See how EA did that. Nickel Over is your everything front, Nickel Wide adds 24 plays for spread sets, and then there is a full mug package sitting underneath — Double Mug at 15, Load Mug at 15, Swap Dbl Mug at 18, Single Mug at 12. Mug looks put both inside linebackers over the A gaps, which forces the offense to slide protection inward and opens your edge rushers against a back.

Dime gives you 54 plays across three sets, headlined by Dime 3-2 Rush at 21. Dollar 3-2 Mug adds 12. On the heavy end you get 46 Bear at six plays, 5-2 Normal at six, and a Goal Line group of three formations holding 13 plays total. Prevent 3 Deep rounds it out with six.

Coverage-wise this book has a clear favorite. Tampa 2 appears in 11 of the 21 formations, more than any other call. Cover 2 Man is in eight, Cover 4 Quarters in seven, and Cover 3 Match, Cover 6, Cover 1 Hole and Cover 3 Sky each appear in six. Cover 2 Invert shows up in five.

That spread is the useful part. Because Tampa 2 lives almost everywhere, you can run the same coverage shell out of a heavy front and a Dime front without ever showing the offense which one is coming until the snap. Zone-match rules and how they pass off vertical routes are the real football concept underneath it, and if that is unfamiliar ground, the American football strategy primer is a decent place to see where those rules came from.

Inside the Numbers

What the distribution really tells you is that this offense is wide and the defense is narrow. Forty-three offensive formations means you can spend a whole season without calling from the same set twice in a series. Twenty-one defensive formations means you will be repeating fronts, so disguise has to come from what you call, not where you line up.

Run the subtraction on the offense and it gets sharper. Gun holds 330 plays, which leaves 263 plays spread across the other eight families. Singleback takes 120 of those, so everything outside Gun and Singleback — Pistol, I Form, Strong, Weak, Split Backs, Goal Line and Hail Mary — adds up to just 143 plays. That is under a quarter of the book.

Personnel tells the same story from another direction: 11 personnel at 53.9 percent, 12 at 25.3, 21 at 9.2 and 13 at 7.1. Those four groups cover better than 95 percent of everything you can call, so your subs screen work is short.

The defensive concentration is heavier still. Nickel and Dime together carry 192 of the 280 plays, leaving 88 for the six remaining families, and three of those families hold six plays apiece.

Now compare it to the rest of the game. On defense this book is a near-twin of two others: the 49ers playbook sits at 55.2 percent shared, and the Titans playbook matches it at 55.2 percent, with 16 shared formations each. The Bengals playbook follows at 48.1 percent. The furthest away is the Buccaneers playbook at 12.5 percent.

Offense is far more distinctive. The closest match is the Ravens playbook at 26.9 percent with 18 shared formations, then the Chargers playbook and the Patriots playbook tied at 22.5 percent. The furthest is Air Raid Classic at 3.2 percent, which is what you would expect from a book this committed to under-center and fullback sets.

How to Run the Cleveland Browns Playbook

Start by picking four formations and living in them. My four: Gun Y Off Trips Wk for the volume, Gun Bunch X Nasty for the release problems bunch creates against press man, Singleback Ace Double Wing for the run game with extra blockers on the edge, and I Form Wing when you need to close a game out on the ground.

Set your audibles from those. You want one inside run, one outside run, one quick game concept and one shot play under the D-pad, all called from a set you can motion into without giving away strength. Inside Zone is the natural inside-run audible here since it appears in more of this book’s formations than any other play, so the same call travels with you no matter which of those four sets you are in.

Here is what makes this work against a human opponent. Because half the book is either a run or play-action, your first quarter should be spent running the ball on early downs even when it gains three. You are buying the second-half play-action, and against a linebacker who has started to jump the run fit, those verticals off a hard fake come open behind him.

On defense, build your game plan around Nickel Over first. Its 42 plays give you man, zone, mug pressure and base fire zones out of the same alignment, so you can call all four without the formation itself telling your opponent anything. Move to Dime 3-2 Rush on obvious third and long, and keep the 4-3 Over package for when someone tries to run 12 personnel at you.

One habit worth building: check the receiver splits before you commit a coverage. Wide splits usually mean a quick out or a slant, tight splits mean crossers or a bunch release. Reading that pre-snap is the single fastest way to improve, and it is the same read real coordinators make on Sunday, which you can watch play out on the NFL broadcasts any week of the season. More of that thinking lives in our Madden tips and guides section.

The offensive book holds 593 plays across 43 formations, an average of 13.8 plays per formation. The defensive book holds 280 plays across 21 formations, an average of 13.3 per formation.

What is the best formation in this playbook?

Gun Y Off Trips Wk is the deepest set at 33 plays, which is more than any other formation in the book. On defense, Nickel Over carries 42 plays, giving you man, zone and mug pressure looks out of one alignment.

Is this a run playbook or a pass playbook?

Final Thoughts on the Browns Madden NFL 27 Playbook

This is where it gets interesting for anyone who has been playing Madden a long time. Books like this one used to be rare — a real fullback package sitting in the same file as 21 Gun formations. Cleveland kept both, and that gives you a genuine two-personality offense instead of a spread book with a token dive play tacked on the end.

I have been breaking books down like this at MaddenGuides.com since 2001, and I wrote the official EA Sports Madden strategy guides for a couple of years along the way, so I will tell you what I tell everyone who asks which book to pick: depth is not the same as usefulness. The Cleveland Browns Madden NFL 27 playbook wins because 330 of its plays come from one family, not despite it. Concentration is what lets you get fast.

Where it will frustrate you is on defense. Twenty-one formations is not many, and against an opponent who has seen your Nickel Over three times, you have to start winning with coverage disguise and user movement rather than a new front. That is a skill ceiling, not a flaw, but go in knowing it.

Pair it with a mobile QB and a back who can run outside zone and you have a book that punishes both light boxes and heavy ones. Check the roster and depth chart on ESPN NFL before you commit, since the personnel fit matters more here than in a pure spread book. More Madden strategies for this scheme are on the way.
